some mornings the trees light up...

With color so vivid it feels like the jungle decided to show off. First comes the electric turquoise flash of a Blue Dacnis, his black head and bright yellow bill standing out as he delicately picks berries from the pink stemmed branches. Moments later, a Green Honeycreeper joins him... A brilliant, saturated green that almost glows against the leaves. Together they move through the same fruiting tree, eating, pausing and filling the canopy with quiet movement and color.

These small birds have become some of my favorite regular visitors.

The Blue Dacnis and Green Honeycreeper are both common in Costa Rica’s rainforest edges and gardens, yet they never fail to stop me in my tracks. The Blue Dacnis wears an almost unreal turquoise that shifts with the light, while the Green Honeycreeper is a pure, vivid emerald that seems to carry the jungle’s own green inside its feathers. They share the same fruiting trees and flowering bushes, often appearing together in small groups.

Watching them feed side by side... heads tilting, beaks carefully selecting the ripest berries, feels like witnessing a gentle, colorful conversation happening high above the forest floor. I love how these little birds bring such vivid life to ordinary mornings.

These jewel toned visitors have become daily reminders to notice and celebrate the small, brilliant sparks of color all around us. These beautiful birds have captured my heart and lens many times.
