There's something about a crested caracara...
When you spot one along the Costa Rican coast. I often find them perched high in the palm trees that line the beach or sometimes walking with quiet confidence across the open sand. Their dark crest, sharp eyes and that distinctive red face give them a bold, almost regal look against the bright sky and green fronds.
They’re not shy birds. They hold their ground and seem perfectly at home in this open, coastal world. Crested Caracaras are common along Costa Rica’s Pacific beaches and open areas. They move easily between the palm trees and the sand, scanning for opportunities below. Sometimes you’ll see one standing tall on a low branch or palm frond, watching the shoreline with focused intensity. Other times they’re down on the ground, walking with a steady, purposeful gait that feels very different from most raptors. Their presence always stands out.
The contrast of their dark feathers against the bright sand or the blue sky makes them easy to notice and once you see one, it’s hard to look away. They carry a quiet strength that fits the wild, open feeling of these beaches.
I’ve come to look for them during my walks along the shore. Watching one settle into a palm or stride across the sand connects me a little more deeply to this incredible place.
