About spotting a Fiery billed aracari in the trees. With their striking black bodies, bright yellow chests and that unmistakable fiery red orange bill, they always feel like a burst of personality high in the canopy.
I’ve been getting to know these birds over time. At first, they felt like fleeting flashes of color. Quick to arrive and quick to disappear. But the more I’ve seen them, the more I’ve come to appreciate their character. They’re social, often moving in small family groups and they have a playful, almost mischievous energy as they hop between branches in search of fruit.
Unlike some of the larger toucans, Fiery billed aracaris tend to stay higher in the trees and can be a little more cautious. But once they feel comfortable in a fruiting tree, they linger... hopping, calling softly to one another and carefully selecting the ripest berries and fruits. Watching them up close has become one of my favorite parts of the jungle day.
Over time, I’ve started recognizing their patterns. Which trees they favor, how they move as a group and the way they seem to take turns feeding. It’s been rewarding to build this quiet familiarity with them, rather than just capturing a single beautiful moment.
These birds remind me that getting to know the wild isn’t always about dramatic encounters. Sometimes it’s about returning to the same places and slowly noticing the characters who live there. These Fiery billed aracari moments have brought me so much joy in this rainforest adventure.
