Some mornings I round the bend near...

The muck pond tree and there he stands. Tall, still and impossibly blue gray against the varied greens of the rainforest. The Great Blue Heron moves like living poetry through the shallow waters and mangrove edges. With his long neck tucked in a graceful S-curve, dagger sharp bill poised and piercing yellow eyes scanning the shallows, he carries a quiet authority in the jungle.

I see him often in two of my favorite places: the muck pond tree (that humble VIP lounge for birds) and the nearby bird sanctuary just down the raw Costa Rican black sandy beach. Both offer the perfect combination he seems to love. Safe, protected shallows with plenty of fish and crustaceans and enough cover to feel undisturbed. He knows these spots well... and so do I.

Watching a Great Blue Heron hunt is one of the most meditative experiences in Costa Rica’s wild. He stands motionless for long stretches, barely a ripple around his yellow legs. Then, with lightning speed, his neck uncoils and the bill strikes! Clean, decisive and almost always successful.

There’s a beautiful rhythm to his days here. In the soft morning light his feathers take on a silvery blue glow that makes the whole wetland feel sacred. He’s one of the reasons I keep returning to these same small stretches of coast and wetland with fresh eyes and an open heart. The wild keeps showing me the same beautiful truth: sometimes the most elegant things are the ones that know exactly when to stand still.

These Great Blue Heron mornings have filled my lens and my heart again and again.
