KINGFISHERS STREAK THROUGH COSTA RICA'S...

rivers and coastal lagoons like living lightning. Vibrant blues and greens, black and white's against quiet waters. Hovering with impossible precision before plunging for delicious fish.

On my most recent trip, I was lucky to spend time with several species, each one a burst of focused intensity wrapped in jewel tones. These beautiful birds perch motionless on overhanging branches, heads tilted, eyes locked on the water below. Then comes the hover... wings beating furiously to hold position, followed by a sudden fold and drop. A quick splash and they emerge with a silver prize, shaking off droplets in triumph! Watching that explosive action after patient waiting feels like witnessing pure mastery.

Kingfishers wear iridescent blues that shift with light, rufous chests warming the scene, crests raised in alert curiosity. They favor hidden waterways where the world slows enough for their precision to shine. Reminding us that true power often arrives in focused silence, striking exactly when the moment is right.

These electric kingfisher hunters are why I return to the water's edge. It's so wild.
