I was sitting peacefully...
On my deck with coffee in hand, savoring the gentle start to the morning, when a distinct crash came from the jungle just beyond the railing. I looked down, and there he was. A single coati emerging from the undergrowth with focused determination.
His long snout moved across the leaf litter as he searched for breakfast, striped tail curled high, moving with quiet confidence through the edge of my world. He passed through fairly quickly, but for those brief, unexpected seconds I had a front row seat to one of Costa Rica’s most charming and curious residents. I kept my camera ready but my presence soft, simply grateful to witness him in his natural rhythm.
Coatis are wonderfully adaptable and endlessly inquisitive. With their distinctive ringed tails, flexible snouts and sharp claws, they forage for insects, fruit, small lizards and whatever the jungle offers.
This solo traveler was completely absorbed in his morning task, unbothered by my quiet observation from the deck. There’s something deeply grounding about watching them move through the world with such purposeful grace... The wild is always busy living its own life right outside our doors.
He disappeared back into the green as suddenly as he had arrived, leaving me with a quiet smile and a heart full of gratitude for the gentle surprise.
