A flock of bright white birds...

Rises from the shallow muddy lagoon just after dawn, long necks stretched, wings catching the soft pink light. Their curved red bills and striking blue eyes stand out against the calm water and green mangroves in Costa Rica. These are the White Ibises. Gentle wading birds that have become some of my favorite companions on morning walks along the Pacific coast.

I often see them stepping carefully through the shallows, probing the mud with their long bills in search of crabs and small fish. They move in loose groups, never in a rush, their snowy white feathers glowing against the tropical backdrop. The younger ones wear a softer mix of brown and white as they grow into their full adult plumage.

Their flight is just as peaceful. Quick flaps followed by smooth glides on curved wings, carrying them from one feeding spot to the next. In the early light, the whole scene feels like a gentle reminder to slow down and simply be present. Watching them always leaves me feeling a little more grounded. In the middle of a life that once felt too busy and loud, these ibises show me the beauty of moving gently and staying connected. Showing up each day, doing what needs doing, without needing to be the loudest voice in the room. They’ve quietly become part of my daily gratitude here in Costa Rica. A simple, steady presence that makes the shoreline feel like home.

These graceful birds have captured my heart and lens many times. Have you ever found comfort in watching a group of birds move together in nature?
